The announcement of the winners will be in London on December 6 this year. The Green Carpet is nominated for:

  • Tunnelling Project of the Year over 1 bn dollar
  • Underground Space Project of the Year
  • Tunnel team of the Year
  • Innovation in Design & Delivery

The Green Carpet plan

The Green Carpet plan provides one approach regarding mobility and quality of life, by providing a good accessibility for city and Euregion, a rapid traffic flow on the A2 highway at the crossing Geusselt and junction Europaplein, and new opportunities for the development of adjacent neighbourhoods since 80% of the traffic is now going underground.

Thanks to the cooperation within the steering group existing of Rijkswaterstaat, municipality of Maastricht, Province of Limburg, municipality of Meerssen and the joint effort of the construction partner Avenue2 - the consortium of Strukton and Ballast Nedam, the innovative plan preparations and realisation of the infrastructure for this complex project could be realised within the planned 10 years and within budget.

The commissioning of the tunnel end 2016 was a historical moment for the city and region. The double layered tunnel of about 2 km long has 2x2 tubes on top of each other and is part of a totally renewed traffic system over a length of 6 km. This renewed traffic system is an enormous improvement for the accessibility, traffic safety and quality of life in the city. The traffic flow of ongoing traffic on the A2, one of the most important highways in the Netherlands, has improved as well because of the tunnel. In 2018, the layout of the new public area on top of the tunnel was completed and put into use; pedestrians and cyclists now have a lot of space. The construction of the first 120 energy neutral homes will start this year. The next 980 homes will follow until 2026. As a result, east and west are reunited and peace and space is created in the city of Maastricht.
